Let Energy Be Thy Guide

The great third Hermetic principle, as described by the Three Initiates in the book The Kybalion, is that of Vibration.

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.” – Three Initiates

Later, in the early 20th century, a polymath by the name of Walter Russell went on to describe this motion as spiral by nature.

“There exists nothing but vibration... The universe consists solely of waves of motion… (where) all motion is curved and all curvature is spiral.” – Walter Russell

A fractal displaying the Fibonacci pattern or golden ratio.

When we observe how phi, the golden ratio, manifests throughout our fractal world displaying endless correspondences, from the macrocosm to the microcosm and back again, this certainly appears to be the case. So by this, we may come to understand that everything in the universe is energy, wherein, the corpus of Hermetic philosophy can be seen to be made up of 3 primary disciplines; that of alchemy, astrology and Kabbalah — each of which describe the manner in which energy flows through, transforms and transmutes our ever-changing world. To understand and harness this energy is the magick we may use to aid us in our hero’s journey, to find meaning in soul’s purpose and ultimately our way back home.

The following post is written with the intent to briefly investigate how these 3 disciplines apply to the 4 areas of farming, medicine-making, energy healing and the aetharian lifestyle. In particular, how we may thus take the Hermetic teachings as a base to then let energy be our guide. So let us begin.

1) Hermetic Farming

In 1924, Rudolph Steiner, an Austrian esotericist and clairvoyant presented a series of lectures on what he coined anthroposophic agriculture. These lectures amounted to what is now considered by many as the foundation of the first modern organic agriculture, better known today as “biodynamic”. Biodynamic farming, in short, is a set of principles and practices that utilize the energetics and cycles of the solar system to grow food/medicine in an abundant, nutritive and regenerative manner that aligns with nature. One where humans are considered as nature and not outside of it. Of course, long before the biodynamic techniques Steiner outlined, many peoples from around the world had long since been utilizing their knowledge of natural cycles in order to act accordingly and in stewardship of the land. This is not in question and is not meant to downplay Steiner’s accomplishments or brilliance, only to highlight that biodynamic farming utilizes Hermetic esoteric knowledge that had existed throughout the corpus contained within the disciplines of astrology and alchemy. A specific methodology so-to-speak, whereby scientific study has now been applied and documented for those who should choose to seek it out.

Ascending and descending waning moon.

A summary of biodynamic astrological and alchemical practices includes the following:

  • Waxing towards full moon – For a few days prior to the full moon the “water” forces of life are particularly powerful so it is a good time to sow.
  • Waning towards new moon – For a few days prior to the new moon the flow of sap up from the roots is weaker so it’s a good time to prune.
  • Ascending moon (Southern transplanting) – Sap is enlivened in upper parts of the plant so it is a good time to cut flowers and harvest fruit or to take cuttings for grafting.
  • Descending moon (Northern transplanting) – Sap is more vital in the lower parts of the plant so it is a good time to transplant as roots will connect with the soil more easily. Good time to top dress with compost in order to stimulate root activity. Good time to prune as sap flow is weak.
  • Apogee – When the moon is farthest from the Earth thus giving weak “water” influence, therefore, sowing crops that easily bolt is best avoided.
  • Perigee – When the moon is closest to the Earth thus giving strong/chaotic “water” influence, therefore, best to go surfing and leave most gardening tasks for another day.
  • The sidereal cycle – When the moon magnifies the energy of each of the constellations throughout its monthly cycle. Whereby:
    • Earth constellations (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) are root days.
    • Water constellations (Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio) are leaf days.
    • Air (Aquarius, Gemini and Libra) are flower days.
    • Fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) are fruit and seed days.
  • Compost alchemy utilizing the following “biodynamic preparations” whereby each plant preparation has its planetary archetype with specific signatures and correspondences:
    • BP 502 – Yarrow (Venus – Potassium for balancing of trace minerals)
    • BP 503 – Chamomile (Mercury – controls nitrogen)
    • BP 504 – Nettle (Mars – iron for strengthening action)
    • BP 505 – Oak Bark (Sun – calcium to control disease)
    • BP 506 – Dandelion (Jupiter – silica to create an environment of expansion)
    • BP 507 – Valerian (Jupiter – phosphate activation)
    • BP 508 – Horsetail (Saturn – silica to control fungal growth)
  • BP 500 – Horn manure mixed with structured water then used as spray when the moon is descending
  • BP 501 – Horn silica (ground quartz) mixed with structured water then used as spray when the moon is ascending
BP 500 – Horn Manure

Note: The term “structured water” was not used by Rudolph Steiner but came about in the early 20th century through the work of Viktor Schauberger, who is also considered to be one of the fathers of permaculture. In the context of biodynamic farming, water is stirred clockwise (Northern hemisphere) to create a vortex, then an abrupt change in direction is applied in order to “create chaos”. This technique is then applied over and over such that the water can organize into an intelligent universal pattern that mirrors cosmic law.

2) Astrological Medicine-making

Astrology allows us to understand the energy that flows through different times and different spaces in a cyclical manner. As described above, this understanding aids us in growing our plant medicine and later when medicine-making, it teaches us when best to harvest. Since planetary energy works through our astral bodies, timing of the harvest according to planetary day and hour allows us to focus the plant’s healing properties with precision, similar to the precise pin carefully placed by an acupuncturist when targeting energy blockages.

Each of the 7 planetary archetypes have correspondences to both plants and people.

Planetary Correspondences for the Sun:

  • Day – Sunday
  • Main organ – Heart
  • Secondary organ  – Blood / Solar Plexis
  • System – Circulatory / Agni Vital Force
  • Tissue – Plasma
  • Botanical – St. John’s Wort / Hawthorn
  • Mineral – Gold
  • Element – Fire

Planetary Days:

  • Sunday (Sun)
  • Monday (Moon)
  • Tuesday (Mars)
  • Wednesday (Mercury)
  • Thursday (Jupiter)
  • Friday (Venus)
  • Saturday (Saturn)

Flexible* Planetary Hours (for Sunday):

  • 1 – Sun
  • 2 – Venus
  • 3 – Mercury
  • 4 – Moon
  • 5 – Saturn
  • 6 – Jupiter
  • 7 – Mars
  • 8 – Sun
  • 9 – Venus
  • 10 – Mercury
  • 11 – Moon
  • 12 – Saturn

* Flexible hours are determined by dividing time between sunrise and sunset by 12.

From this we may determine that should we intend to harvest St. John’s Wort, to treat depression, an optimal harvest time might be Sunday (due to the plant’s planetary ruler being the Sun) and within the 4th planetary hour (due to the Moon’s organ correspondence being the brain).

When determining a plant’s planetary ruler we may look to the following signatures:

  • Location
  • Timing / Seasonality
  • Elemental Composition
  • Morphology and Structure
  • Colour and Appearance
  • Taste
  • Scent

It is also possible to harvest according to the moon’s cycles. Similar to biodynamic farming we may look to when the moon is magnifying a particular constellation, since each of the 12 signs of the zodiac correspond to a specific organ system. For example, Pisces is governed by Jupiter and rules the feet, all bodily fluids and the lymphatic system.

A rose demonstrates correspondences to the planetary archetype of Venus.

Once harvesting has occurred, alchemy may then be applied during the medicine-making process.

Paracelsus, the Swiss alchemist born 1461, is the father of plant alchemy used to make what he called spagyric medicine.

“What is the human body but a constellation of the same powers that formed the stars in the sky? He who knows what iron is, knows the attributes of Mars. He who knows Mars, knows the qualities of iron. What would become of your heart if there were no sun in the universe? What would be the use of your ‘vasa spermatica’ if there were no Venus? To grasp the invisible elements; to attract them by their material correspondences; to control, purify, and transform them by the living power of the Spirit – this is true alchemy.” – Paracelsus

“Spagyric” means to separate then recombine. Alchemists believe that all physical forms can be separated into 3 fundamental substances through alchemical processes. This trinity is:

  • Salt (body) – crystalline mineral salts released through fire
  • Mercury (spirit) – ethyl alcohol released through fermentation and distillation
  • Sulphur (soul) – essential oils released through distillation
Conceptual wood-fired still in an alchemy lab.

Once purified through separation, then recombined, what we have is a medicine far greater than the sum of its parts. Spagyrics imbue the plant medicine with planetary energy while on a physical level increase its bioavailability. When we use the whole plant (or fungi) in this way, as opposed to, the mere specific chemical constituents targeted to treat a specific symptom, we allow these beings to teach our bodily systems to heal us at an energetic root level. When we view planets as celestial plants and plants as terrestrial planets, we are able to use alchemy in our medicine-making to capture and amplify their energy and treat the wholeness of our being. That of body, soul and mind.

3) Energy Healing

Where the mind goes energy flows. Meditation and practices such as Qi Gong help us to achieve a feeling state whereby we can then perceive subtle life force energies within us and emanating from our dense bodies as electromagnetic waves, also known as auras.  This feeling state allows for interoception to occur and for us to identify energy blockages that can then be addressed through lifestyle changes and ancient healing practices such as: Acupuncture/pressure, Reflexology, Reiki, sound and light therapy, etc.

Spectrum of vital energy.

This holistic energetic approach attempts to address health and wellness through lifestyle changes and is fundamentally different from an allopathic approach where “magic pills” are prescribed to fix what are often symptoms of a deeper issue. Unfortunately, these allopathically prescribed remedies are often accompanied with side effects that can cause further imbalances while leaving root causes untouched. Further, what sometimes occurs is a complex cocktail of interacting drugs where contraindications exist. The allopathic approach, for both pharmaceuticals and herbal remedies, often lacks in that it does not recognize that each individual is unique at every level – body, soul and mind.

So then, a truly holistic approach must look to the uniqueness of each individual and their given environment when healing. It is here that the 4 foundational elemental forces of Hermeticism are profoundly equipped to assist us.

Elements are foundational in many traditional systems of medicine. They have a cosmology and each has energy ranging from volatile to fixed. The Hermetic doctrine of emanations describes the beginning as Heaven and Earth, where the Earth was without form. All of existence emanated from this formless singularity. No time. No space. No duality. Only potential. Formless, yet containing all forms. The Prima Materia, or “first matter”, divided into two and so Celestial Salt and Celestial Niter were born, thus creating our dualistic material world governed by time and space. Any polarity has its root in this primal duality that emerged from the Prima Materia. So then, the great seventh Hermetic principle, as decribed in the Kybalion, is that of gender. Gender is manifested in all things. Celestial Niter is the masculine force of the universe. The primal energy that turns the wheel of time and instills consciousness into all form. Celestial Salt is the feminine force that provides the womb for the Celestial Niter to operate through. These masculine and feminine forces undergo their own division to create the four fundamental forces or elements. Celestial Niter divides to become the two volatile elements of Fire and Air. Celestial Salt divides to become the two fixed elements of Water and Earth. These progressions represent the universal spirit, or consciousness, condensing into physical form. From the primordial spiral comes a fractal universe of chaos yielding to order. One divided by contrast yet unified as substance, whereby nature’s intelligence can be witnessed through her fractal patterns. Following this foundation, the five elements come together as particular geometric patterns to generate a new material matrix of frequencies. In Taoism this dualism is known by the names Yin and Yang.

Aside: These geometric patterns correspond to the 5 Platonic Solids, each of which can be derived from the Flower of Life as seen in ancient artwork from around the world.

The 5 Platonic solids and their elemental correspondences:

  • Tetrahedron – Fire
  • Octahedron – Air
  • Hexahedron – Earth
  • Icosahedron – Water
  • Dodecahedron – Aether

Fire and Air come together to form Sulphur. Air and Water form Mercury. Earth and Water form Salt. As such, the trinity of primal substances make up the four elemental forces. Through Spirit, energy can be traced from the primordial spiral of creation to the dualistic world. The incorporeal descending from the Heavens, to become corporeal, can be accessed through the Quintessence or fifth element, that of Aether.

Each individual has correspondences to the elements that can help to identify constitutional, psychological and emotional patterns. Once we recognize these we can then determine tissue states and what medicinal energetics are best applied. Whether these be heating or cooling, hydrating or drying and toning or relaxing. This pathology can be even more finely tuned by looking at one’s natal chart which acts as a map of their body, soul and mind when attempting to identify patterns of disease.

4) Aetharianism

Aether is the fifth Hermetic element, also known as the Quintessence. It is the vital force also referred to by many other names throughout the world, including: Prana, Chi, Mana, Qi, Gi, Ki, Orgone, etc. A universal substance, acting as the medium for the transmission of electromagnetic waves, Aether is weightless, transparent, frictionless, undetectable through direct physical measurement and permeates all matter and space.

Etemology of the word “aetharian” reveals a compound of the noun “aether” and the suffix “arian”. It can thusly be determined that “aetharianism” refers to a holistic lifestyle aimed at cultivating Aether as the primary source of fuel for the body.

The aetharian lifestyle is one of energy cultivation and mind/body connection. It is a holistic and spiritual health journey whereby the practitioner allows energy to be their guide. Through a feeling state, that guides healthful changes in lifestyle, one can move gradually away from denser foods and ultimately have sustenance provided by the purest and cleanest form of energy. That of Aether. And through this direct connection to nature’s energy source, one is granted a great many gifts, including wellness and the expansion of one’s consciousness.

To accomplish this transformation of the body one must drive energy from the lower energy centres, also known as the lower Chakras, to the pineal gland, also know as the third eye Chakra. By doing this, there is an increase of both Melatonin and DMT production, not only within the pineal but also throughout the body . These increases that occur due to the “opening” and decalcification of the pineal correlate to a number of enabling transformations within the body.

They are as follows:

  • An increase in Theta and Gamma brain waves.
  • An increase in ATP production and productivity.
    • ATP is the “energy molecule” within the cell’s mitrochondria that facilitates cellular activity. It is a coenzyme that works in conjunction with the enzyme ATP Triphosphatase to transfer energy to the cell by releasing its phosphate group.
  • An increase of Leptin that stimulates the sympathetic nervous system thus reducing hunger.
  • A reduction of Ghelin, typically released when the stomach is empty, to increase appetite.

In conclusion, when we let energy be our guide in all aspects of our life, we experience a constant reminder that everything in nature connects to the one vital life force. The Aether. An intelligence that flows everywhere and through all things. The light erasing darkness to reveal the true life-giver. The dance of the divine to which all life possesses a gift of unique purpose and wherein, it is biodiversity that brings forth the abundance and resilience required to heal each sacred wound within the material world.
